David, a 12-year-old orphan who lives in Europe, learns about the prophecy and believes that he is the chosen child and that destiny must be fulfilled at any cost. 回复 :渡辺小五郎（東山紀之）の家では、義母のこう（野際陽子）が亡くなって以来、妻のふく（中越典子）が失意の日々を送っていた。妻の身を案じた小五郎は、同僚の同心・住之江彦左衛門（松尾諭）のすすめで義母の遺品整理を決める。渡辺家にやってきたのは弥吉（伊藤健太郎）という爽やかな青年。油問屋で手代として働くかたわら、人々の不要な品物を引き取っては、他の人の品物と交換する「橋渡し役」をしているという。持ち前の顔の広さで、経師屋の涼次（松岡昌宏）やお菊（和久井映見）とも付き合いのある弥吉だが、交換の橋渡しはすべて無償でおこなっているという。人と人をつなぐために汗をかく弥吉は、まさに絵に描いたような善人だ。商人の蘇我屋忠兵衛（近藤芳正）と上総屋清右ヱ門（西田敏行）から、交換の手間賃を受け取って商売にしろと誘いを受けても、きっぱり断った。そんな弥吉には将来を約束した許嫁のおたね（飯豊まりえ）がいる。病に伏せるおたねの母を見舞った弥吉は、近い将来おたねと祝言を上げたいと申し出た。ところが、母娘が暮らす長屋がヤクザ者に買い取られて強引に破壊されてしまう。騒乱に巻き込まれ、おたねの母も殺されてしまった。おたねの手を引いて逃げのびた弥吉は、商人の蘇我屋忠兵衛が黒幕だと知り、町奉行所に訴え出る。しかし、与力の増村倫太郎（生瀬勝久）は上からの圧力を受けて捜査に踏み出さない。晴らせぬ恨みを抱えたおたねは、リュウ（知念侑李）と瓦屋の陣八郎（遠藤憲一）から三番筋の存在を聞かされる。そこで弥吉は物々交換の手間賃をもらうことを決意し、集めた銭を頼み賃に「仕事」を依頼した。頼みを聞き入れ、的を次々と仕留めていく仕事人たち。蘇我屋忠兵衛を斬り捨てた小五郎だが、なぜか釈然としない。この一件の背後には何かウラがある……。一方、おたねを幸せにしたい一心の弥吉は、上総屋清右ヱ門のすすめで物々交換を正式に商売にしようと決める。老中の諏訪守忠悦（林家正蔵）ともコネクションを持つ清右ヱ門が後見人となったこともあり、弥吉の商売はあれよあれよという間に軌道に乗り、大金が舞い込んでくる。しかし、その背後には驚くべき陰謀が蠢いていたのだった……。
