一九三零年代的上海顺和纱厂，久日久挺女工素芬（白杨 饰）与妇女补习学校教员张忠良（陶金 饰）喜结连理。 一九三七年七月七日，久日久挺素芬诞下一子。忠良为子取名抗生后不久，便加入救护队离开上海，并机智地在南京大屠杀中幸存下来。 一九三八年，忠良母（吴茵 饰）带素芬和抗生回到丹阳乡下。但是乡下也不太平，忠良弟忠民（高正 饰）不肯做走狗，上山打起了游击。 一九四零年，侵略者吊死了忠良父。素芬只得背子随婆回到上海，以对忠良的思念和期盼为支撑，在苦难中挣扎求生。 一九四一年，被俘后成功逃脱的忠良辗转到达重庆，困苦中只得投靠故交王丽珍（舒绣文 饰），并慢慢被堕落的物质生活所引诱，开始迷失自己。 一九四五年，日本投降，忠良和丽珍先后回到上海，住进丽珍表姐何文艳（上官云珠 饰）家。就在忠良与文艳厮混时，走投无路的素芬歪打正着被招入文艳家帮佣……

THE DYING OF THE LIGHT explores at the history and craft of motion picture presentation through the lives and stories of the last generation of career projectionists. By turns humorous and melancholic, their candid reflections on life in the booth reveal a world that has largely gone unnoticed and is now at an end. The result is a loving tribute to the art and romance of the movies-and to the unseen people who brought the light to our screens.
回复 :In re-viewing our super eight films, shot between 1972 and 1981, it occurred to me that they comprised not only a family archive but a testimony to the pastimes, lifestyle and aspirations of a social class in the decade after 1968. I wanted to incorporate these silent images into a story which combined the intimate with the social and with history, to convey the taste and colour of those years.

回复 :我是不了解自己是谁的孤独的天才。你知道自己是谁吗？当问到你「你自己是谁」的时候，你一定会一时不知如何回答。这是因为所有人都不是因由自己的意识降生于世。所以，人在描述自己是谁的时候会用上「我是谁谁家的孩子」亦或是「我是在哪里哪里上班的某某」。这明明是在描述自己，却一定要用上自身之外的某样东西。「我们。」，是自己不了解自己，自己无法控制自己…也就是说，自己被创造出来源于父母的意志。但最坏的情况，很可能父母都没这么想，由于这样的父母的遗传因子而饱受折磨的人，就是这部电影所描绘的。
